We like to serve organic food
Organic food is one way of contributing to a sustainable future for both animals and humans. We also think it tastes good. We want all our hotels to be able to offer you organic food and food that is produced in a healthy manner. We have come quite a long way in this respect. Today, we serve a total of 1,000 tonnes of organic food every year in the Nordic region. Good food naturally has to be available to everyone. We therefore serve bread that is gluten-free and milk without lactose.
Make the day a fair one with a steaming cup of respect
Good coffee has taken on a whole new meaning with us. Since 2006, every cup of filter coffee, espresso and cappuccino served at Scandic in Sweden has been Fairtrade. That means 9 million cups of coffee every year. This way, we and our guests help ensure better living conditions for the coffee growers and their families. Fairtrade guarantees a minimum price for the coffee, which means more money for the growers. The growers also receive a premium that can be used to develop their local society, for example with schools and healthcare. At our hotels in Denmark, we serve UTZ certified coffee. UTZ guarantees that the coffee is grown with social and environmental responsibility, and the coffee can always be traced to a country and grower.
KRAV organics
Our buffet breakfast is a healthier way to start the day. Since 2001, the breakfasts at all Swedish Scandic hotels have carried KRAV's organic certification. We serve up to 22 KRAV certified products, ranging from bread and cheese to yoghurt and muesli. Together we are making a contribution towards agriculture free from pesticides and artificial fertilisers, and helping to ensure that livestock are treated well and allowed to be outdoors. There are also always organic options at our hotels in Denmark, Finland and Norway.
No to genetically modified foods
GMO stands for genetically modified organisms in food. We at Scandic generally welcome new technology that leads to better products. However, for ethical and environmental reasons, we question genetically modified foods and crops. We require that our suppliers do not supply us with genetically modified products.
Climate labelling of food
Go into a food store in London and you can see how far a vegetable has travelled and how much carbon dioxide it has generated. We don't go that far yet, but preparations for climate labelling are in full swing. At Scandic, we are following this development with interest.
A fair recipe
At Scandic, we boycott jumbo prawns because their cultivation destroys ecosystems and economies. Instead, we have chosen to serve crayfish in our restaurants. It has a great taste that lingers deliciously. If you're curious, try it out for yourself.
